Microsoft Defender Can Now Automatically Lock Down Hacked Computers

Zack Ibanez
President, EZETech

Microsoft is testing a new feature for its Defender program that can lock down a computer all by itself the moment it gets hacked. This stops hackers from hopping from one computer to another inside your office network.

⚡ Why this matters for your business: Hackers like to break into one computer and then use it to reach others, your file server, your database, your printer. Automatic lockdown stops them cold.

Right now this feature is in preview mode, which means it is still being tested. It is part of something Microsoft calls automatic attack disruption. That is just a fancy way of saying: the computer fights back on its own so your IT team has more time to fix things.

How It Works

When Microsoft Defender thinks a computer might be hacked, it cuts that computer off from the rest of the network. The hacked computer can still talk to Microsoft Defender (so the security team can watch it), but it cannot talk to anything else.

"Automatic isolation helps reduce the risk of further damage, stops hackers from moving around, and prevents problems like stolen data or ransomware."

Quick Facts

  • Works on: Office computers that have Microsoft Defender turned on
  • Status: Still in testing (preview)
  • Undo: Your IT team can unlock the computer anytime after they have checked it out
  • How: Go to “Device inventory,” pick the computer, and click “Release from isolation”

A Growing Defender Ecosystem

Microsoft has been steadily expanding Defender’s containment abilities. Here are the key milestones:

  • June 2022 — Manual Containment: Admins could manually contain compromised, unmanaged Windows devices by cutting off communication with onboarded endpoints.
  • Jan – Oct 2023 — Linux Isolation: Device isolation support for Defender for Endpoint on Linux devices entered testing and reached general availability.
  • October 2023 — Account Isolation: Microsoft extended automatic attack disruption to isolate compromised user accounts and block lateral movement in hands-on-keyboard attacks.
  • 2026 — Auto Isolation & More: Automatic endpoint isolation, undiscovered endpoint blocking, and scheduled Linux scans via Defender portal, JSON, or CLI.
