Nearly three weeks ago T-Mobile was hacked. T-Mobile, one of the largest telecommunications companies, had the sensitive information of about 50 million customers exposed. Names, addresses, and social security numbers for about 48 million people were accessed and stolen. About 50 thousand Metro by T-Mobile customers were also affected.
Who did it and how?
The cyber-attack was done by 21-year-old US citizen John Binns. It is said that Binns conducted the attack from his home in Turkey. Binns explained to the to the Wall Street Journal that he had be searching for gaps in T-Mobiles defenses. He eventually found a way in through its internet addresses via an unprotected router. From there, he was able to explore more than 100 servers and access the sensitive information.
T-Mobile Hack Response?
T-Mobile is currently investigating the incident. The company is being as transparent as possible in the investigation and even providing information to those that have been affected. T-Mobile has increased its security and is continuing protecting their customers. They have partnered with McAfee to allow their customers to sign up for two free years of McAfee’s Identity Theft Protection.
